Taking Back March
Don’t let the cover photo fool you. This post isn’t about food. Yes, I am going to tell you about the new dish I made for dinner tonight. But it’s not about the food. I’m no food blogger by any stretch of the means.
But. March is usually a very shitty month for me. I got my wisdom teeth removed in March. I had my appendix removed in March…while 25 weeks pregnant with my son. I had a difficult falling out with an immensely dear, long-time friend in March. I spiralled lower than I ever thought possible and received my first “depression” diagnosis in March. And that was just within the past five years.
March and I don’t quite get along.
But I’m determined to change that.
This year, I am going on the offence. (Offence? Or is it defence? Fucked if I know. I’m not a sports person.)
This year, I am filling my March up with as many fun, positive, exciting, new things as possible. Tonight, I am going to a ‘90s-themed yoga class at Modo Yoga Orleans. The proceeds from tonight’s class will be donated to Interval House in Ottawa.
And today, I am cooking a brand-new dinner dish I’ve never cooked before.
For some reason, I found myself with an abundance of smoked salmon. We love smoked salmon and don’t eat it all that often because, well, it can be pricey. But I thawed out too much, and I don’t want it to go bad, so tonight, I’m making smoked salmon and potato gratin. It seems similar to scalloped potatoes, which will be interesting because I don’t normally like scalloped potatoes. I imagine the kids will love it, though. Creamy potatoes, cheese, salmon… what’s not to love?!
On a side note, when I walked to the store to pick up the other ingredients required for this dish, I asked Erick if he wanted anything else from the store. He said he wanted his crackers, but only if they were on sale. So, I checked, and they were 2 for $7.00. My bag was feeling kind of heavy, so I almost didn’t put the crackers in. But they were on sale, so I grabbed them.
Well, wouldn’t you know, the crackers didn’t scan properly, and I paid full price. I went to customer service to either return them or get them for the advertised price. Luckily for me, because they scanned incorrectly, they gave me one box at the sale price and one box for free! Score!
**Edited to add: Plot Twist! An interesting turn of events this evening. I ended up really enjoying the potatoes au gratin, and the kids hated it. Kalix took one bite and said it made his tongue feel funny. Hmm… Also, the yoga class tonight was the yoga class that would never end! I’m still a beginner, so an hour-and-a-half yoga class was way too much for me. I thought it was going to be a fun flow to ’90s music! You know, more dancing than posing?!
I guess this means trying new things won’t always turn out the way you hoped they would. I have half a casserole dish left of potatoes to eat, and I’m going to be super sore tomorrow from this class. Either way, I regret nothing.
I have a few other events on my calendar this month that I am eager for. Along with my weekly Zumba classes, some are new experiences, and some are old favourites. Erick and I are attending our first-ever candlelight concert: A Tribute to Adele. There is the Holistic Healing Fair I’ll be going to with two of my closest friends. And I bought tickets to a virtual comedy show, “Sounds About White.”
March 2023 is not going to take me down this time—I’m taking matters into my own hands. I’ve come a long way since this time last year. It’s going to be my best March yet!
